Organization is a difficult task in the planning process. In my opinion, the most effective way of organizing is also the most difficult: hierarchical levels. The reason this is so difficult is because it requires taking the scope of all users into consideration. The best way to accomplish this type of sorting, is to ask for each user group, “What is the reason this person is coming to our website?” For as many groups as possible, that answer should be in the first categorical listing in the top or side bar.
I know that when I go to a website, I am significantly discouraged when helpful results are not set up into a top or side bar. It makes for easier navigation if the site is separated into broader categories, from which the user can decide what is applicable. These categories are crucial to the accessibility of a website. When given the choice between a wall of links and nice, neat categories, I’m sure I’m not alone in desiring the simplified latter option.
